FUE Hair Treatment Overseas

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant treatment

Natural hair transplant is the most elegant and successful method of hair restoration and resolving hair loss. Our method gives hair multiplication by allowing donor follicles to regenerate. The treatment resolves hair loss on temples, receding hairline, bald spot on top of head, and scars.

FUE (follicular unit extraction) hair multiplication involves transplanting microscopic grafts of hair follicles from the donor area where there is plenty of hair to the recipient area where there is a shortage of hair. In cases of male pattern baldness the donor area is the back of the head and the recipient area the front of the head. The treatment is minimum invasive compared to older methods. One to three treatments may be required depending on transplant required and the available donor hair.

The procedure: A local anesthetic is applied to the required areas with a special instrument. Some Anxiolytic (eg valium) is given before the treatment. Then the individual grafts, which contain 1-3 hairs (or more precisely hair follicles) are removed one by one by means of a small, specially developed needle from the donor area on the back of the head. The grafts are placed in a special solution, which protects them against external influences and contains substances that will support the implantation and healing of the grafts. See Photos of donor area. The size of the grafts is 0.75 mm or 0.65mm (depending on hair thickness).

Tiny implantation openings, normally 0.65 mm, are made in the recipient area with a similar special needle that has the same shape as the grafts . The grafts are implanted and fit perfectly into the openings. See Before and After Photos of the recipient area.

Before the treatment: Patients sign the GHO Treatment Agreement before the treatment. Patients should follow the Pre-treatment Instructions.

Duration of treatment: Treatment up to 1,000 grafts may take 3-6 hours. Treatment of more than 1,000 grafts will normally be done over 2 or 3 days.

After-care: The doctor will specify After-care Instructions at time of treatment, including special wash, ointments, antibiotics and restrictions on diet and physical activity during recovery. Patients can resume activities after 3 days and are required to wear a hat for 3-5 days.

Recovery: The treated area may have slight swelling for a couple of days. Scabs may form and fall off within 2 weeks. The skin of the recipient area is mostly healed within 2 weeks. Some or all (average 50%) of hairs in the transplanted grafts drop out in 2-8 weeks. Post-treatment consultation with the doctor is not necessary but is possible at any time in person or by email and phone. The skin of the donor area is healed within 2 weeks. The hair of the donor area is cut short at the treatment, so the area may be visible for some time depending on the length of the hair.

Hair growth: New hair growth occurs from 2-3 months. Final results after around 6 months, after some substantial hair growth. Waiting for the new hair to grow can be the most difficult part of the process for patients. 96% of follicles transplanted generate hair.

Repeat treatments: Repeat treatment may be required depending on the result desired, the size of the donor area, and the future balding pattern of the existing hair. If there is insufficient donor area for the volume of transplant required, then more follicles can be taken from a donor area after 6-12 months (minimum 6 or preferably 12 months). If hair loss continues and a thin spot develop behind the transplanted area, then this may require a repeat treatment some time in the future. The timing and pattern of future hair loss varies greatly between individuals. The possible need for repeat treatments will be discussed at the consultation.

A renewable source of new hair: A small part of the follicle remains in the donor area and a new hair will grow from it. Therefore more follicles can be taken from the donor area if a subsequent treatment is required. The recovery rate of donor follicles is approximately 70%.

Transplant of body hair: It is also possible to transplant body hair to other parts of the body. They can be used for hair transplant on the head. It can also treat, for example, the eyebrows. For men chest hair is often the best source. While initially the transplanted hair may be of a different nature, over time the nature of the hair will change to that of the normal hair of the recipient area. Pricing is the same as for regular transplant.

Women: FUE hair multiplication transplant is also suitable for women. Hair loss is women is subject to very different patterns and causes than men (which mostly are from male pattern baldness and follows some regular patterns). We can provide an assessment of women’s cases from photos and consultation.
