Eyelid Surgery Overseas (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty or eyebag removal) resolves wrinkled skin, drooping upper eyelids and bags below the eyes. Features that can make you look older and more tired than you feel. The result can improve appearance and restore a youthful look to the face. It can improve functioning of the eye and in some cases improve vision. It is commonly done for both men and women. It may be done as part of a treatment plan including other treatment such as a face lift.

Procedure: The surgery removes extra eyelid skin, fat and muscle from the upper and/or lower eyelids. For the lower eyelids a fine incision is made just below the eyelash. For the upper eyelids a strip if skin is removed in the natural crease of the eyelid. Both eyelids can be done at the same time. Patients should not smoke at all at least 1-2 weeks before and after surgery. It is normally done under sedation anesthesia, but can also be done under local or general anesthesia. Surgery takes 1-2 hours. Patients normally spend 1 night in clinic, but it is possible as an outpatient (home same day).

Recovery: Stiches and bandages are removed after 5-6 days. Recovery takes about 7 days. Recommended stay in Prague and back to work about 6 days, possibly with makeup to hide bruising. Activity should be minimised for 3-5 days after surgery and strenuous exercise avoided for 2-3 weeks. For up to 4 weeks some bruising may be visible, eyelids may feel dry and the eyes may be sensitive. Sunglasses should be worn. Contact lenses cannot be worn from 2 or more weeks. Scars fade to faint white lines and are not normally visible.
